Lot 664		1856. PCGS graded Proof 62 PQ. Well struck with lovely colors and simply outstanding sharp detail in the eagle. Mint designer-engraver James Barton Longacre reworked Gobrecht's soaring eagle of 1836-9 and placed it on the obverse of America's first Small Cents. These were first given the name "white cents" by the public and must have been strikingly brilliant and silvery when new compared to the old red Large Cents then being withdrawn. For the reverse Longacre adapted his first wreath of cereals design first used on Gold Dollars and Three-dollar. The 1856 issue is, of course, THE coin to buy if you can afford it. Lot 665		1856. NGC Proof, obverse damage. Still a decent looking coin that should easily realize our conservative estimate. Popular Key Date. The government�s imminent approval of a statute to alter the amalgam of the Cent in 1856 left Mint Director Snowden pleading for a design to begin trial strikings without delay. The task of achieving a satisfactory product in this environment fell to James Barton Longacre. For the obverse, the designer selected a variant of the flying eagle that graced the reverse of the 1836-9 Gobrecht Pattern Dollars. Although nearly two decades old, this eagle hadn�t faded into obscurity; it had appeared on several Patterns of 1854-5. The reverse got a copy of the wreath of corn, cotton, maple, and tobacco that already appeared on Longacre�s Dollar and $3 Gold pieces. Despite the short production run of this design, the rarity and allure of 1856 Proof strikings insured that it would remain forever a part of the collecting lore and popularity. Lot 669		1859. PCGS graded Proof 65. Delicately toned. Popular on-year type coin. Only 800 proofs struck. An outstanding deep mirror example with exquisite surfaces and wonderful eye appeal. Essentially as made per the qualifications for the grade. Popular and important as a one year type design featuring Longacre's Indian head design and a simple reverse design featuring a Laurel wreath reverse around the denomination, "ONE CENT". However, the obverse portrait is actually "Lady Liberty", a Caucasian representation of Liberty borrowed from the Three Dollar design of 1854. She is wearing a headdress of a Native American of the Chippewa tribe. The reverse is actually an olive wreath, although the laurel wreath description is somewhat accurate as their leaves are visually similar. Pop 50; 1 in 65+, 19 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 2247) . Lot 670		1859. PCGS graded Proof 64 CAC Approved. Well struck and delicately toned. A beauty and free from any noticeably flyspecks. Only 800 Proofs struck of this desirable one-year Type. Pop 130, 71 finer (PCGS # 2247) . Historic note: The coins that were struck between 1859 and 1864 were composed of 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, as required by law. In 1864, the weight of the coins was reduced from 72 grains to the present weight of 48 grains, and the alloy changed to 95 percent copper and 5 percent tin and zinc. Research in 1863 indicated that bronze was an excellent alloy for minor coins, and so the copper-nickel alloy was discontinued. Total production of the Indian Head cent was 1,849,648,000 pieces. Lot 672		1860. PCGS graded Proof 65 CAC Approved. A dazzling brilliant gem proof, basically untoned and looks like it just came from the mint! Only 1,000 Proofs struck. This is a very tough date to find in full gem condition. The majority of the mintage was struck only once, imparting an impression that usually did not strike out all of the planchet marks. The quality of the 1860 issue is always somewhat problematic compared to the quality seen up to 1859 and after 1861. 1860 Proofs are nearly always seen with mirrors that are only moderate and edges that are rounded, which is why these are sometimes confused as being Prooflike strikings. Lot 673		1861. PCGS graded Proof 65 PQ CAC Approved. A glittereing brilliant proof with a hint of light tone. Only 1,000 proofs struck. Devices are frosted and we note moderately deep mirror fields. This is an outstanding example of this exceptionally challenging date. As with the 1860 issue, many coins struck this year were struck only once on moderately mirrored dies. This quality standards at the Mint for Proofs had as yet to be finalized, making 1861 a real tough issue to locate in gem condition. Out of the original mintage, possibly 400 were released. The survivor rate seems to be quite low, perhaps because substandard examples were spent, or included collections as non-Proofs. There is enormous collector demand for this issue in gem condition. Lot 675		1863. PCGS graded Proof 65. Delicately toned with hints of light iridescense. Only 460 Proofs struck. Nearly the entire issue of Proof pieces was struck from a single set of dies. Later in the year a new set of regular Proof dies were made to strike the bronze pattern issue, J-299 to test the feasibility of changing the composition of the cent from copper-nickel to bronze. Lot 680		1864. Bronze. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red. A flashy light golden mint red proof. Only 150 or so proofs struck. To aid the Mint in coining large numbers of the new bronze coins beginning in 1864, a private company received a contract to prepare blanks for the bronze coinage. With this help, the Mint was able to strike nearly 60 million coins in the last seven months of 1864. The small coin shortage was over. The actual mintage of this issue is unrecorded but considering the few pieces extant today in all grades and colors and the number that must have been lost over the years from attrition, it had to have been low. The fields on this piece are nicely mirrored on each side and each side shows a pleasing mix of coppery red colors. A lovely example of this solidly graded Gem Proof 65 Red. Lot 704		1877. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red. A fabulous gem proof specimen featuring a hue of pinkish-red with hints of lighter gold. A truly magnificent example of this Key Date issue. An outstanding example of this key date. As one should expect for a coin in this grade, the surfaces are exceptional. No Mint caused defects occur on the planchet nor do spots occur, thus everything is there to express the Proof 65 grade free from limitation. This example is virtually unimprovable in its Proof 65 category. Always popular as a Proof example of the key date in the Indian Cent series. No precise mintage figure exists for the Proof 1877 Indian, but enough information is available to make an educated guess. Breen lists 510 in his Proof Encyclopedia. The present estimate is now 910. It is known that 510 "Silver" sets were sold which included the five silver coins, the two nickel coins and the cent. Additionally, there were about 400 "Nickel" sets struck which included just the cent and the two nickel coins, of which we know 260 were mailed out, with the unknown remainder being sold over the counter in Philadelphia. The reverse die used to strike this example is the "Bulged T" reverse, which was first used in 1872 and was used to strike many of the Proof issues between that date and 1877. The right pennant of the T is in much higher relief that the other parts of the letter. This feature neither raises nor lowers the desirability of the coin. Lot 705		1877. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Traces of mint red on both sides. The Key Date in the Indian Head series. This is an outstanding gem example with sultry red and brown luster assisted by a better than average strike. At present there are limited numbers of Gem Mint State 1877s graded by NGC (see below) and to supply the growing legions of Indian cent collectors. The obverse is virtually mark free as is the reverse, while the reverse does show light striking definition in the lower wreath although the shield is complete.
